Halthy and Wellness Living Through Sports

 

 

Makerere University sports and recreation department has launched a website to showcase all its activities.

INTRODUCTION

The Sports and Recreation Department is mandated to cater for students’ and staff welfare through providing sporting and recreational activities and sports competitions. The business of the department is sports achievable through an effective means of improving skills, talent identification, hiring the best personnel in the sports field, coaching, monitoring and grooming the talent and moulding individuals into complete beings. This is made possible by availability of physical resources, facilities, infrastructure and equipment. Financial resources and Human resources (Staff, coaches and athletes) and the stake holders (National Sports Federations, National Council of Sports, Uganda Olympic Committee, NUSFU,FASU,FISU and the Government of the Republic of Uganda .

 


  PROGRAMS OFFERED BY THE DEPARTMENT

   
Interhall

The nine halls (6-men, 3-women) of residence compete in a year round programme that entails the participation of students in the organization and management of competitions. The programme runs alongside the academic time table that spans the whole year and culminates in the Sports Man’s Dinner. This is when outstanding performers are recognized for their efforts.   THE CONTRIBUTION OR THE DEPARTMENT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPORTSD IN UGANDA
   

The department has produced some of the leading athletes on national teams ably representing Uganda. The former students churned out through the student-led Games Union. The best performing and developing National Sports Federations are led by former sports persons of Makerere University. Rugby-Owiny, Athletics- Dan Tamwesigire, Football-Lawrence Mulindwa, Badminton-William Tumwine, Swimming-Don Rukare, Cricket-Dr. Ssebale, Uganda Olympic committee-Peninnah Kabenge to mention but a few. The contribution of Sports and Recreation Department to the development of sports in Uganda cannot therefore be underestimated. The inter hall programme is the most comprehensive in all Universities and has been adopted as a model for all our regional universities. The knowledge and skills imparted to students through hands on training in managing their own programme is invaluable and has had a knock on effect on National Federations.


  WHAT THE DEPARTMENT HAS TO OFFER
   

The Department of Sports and Recreation at Makerere University offers a wide variety of programs and activities for students, faculty/staff & the community. We will help you to develop new skills and interests that will make a positive/healthy influence on your life.

Department facilities include: The Recreation Center, Events Center, Gymnasium, Tennis Courts, Sand Volleyball Courts, Campus Pool, Baseball Pitch, Football Pitch.
Department offices are located in the Recreation Center near the Swimming Pool.
